This is what happens if you don't bother to wear your gloves whilst MIG welding, and a blob of molten steel lands on the edge of a gold wedding ring.
The ring
The finger
The finger that evening
The finger the next day
And this is what happens if you pinch your finger in a spring when reassembling a coil-over. The area of finger was crushed completely flat, and I had to tear a chunk out of my finger to get free.

This is what happens if you don't wear adequate protective cloting whilst laying on your back welding upside down. A jumper and t-shirt do not slow a blob of molten steel down very much.
